Innovative new store model delivers a differentiated consumer health experience

PHILADELPHIA — Individuals and families across Philadelphia and south New Jersey can now experience health care that is simple, convenient and affordable with the debut of HealthHUB, CVS Health's [NYSE: CVS] new store design in 13 CVS Pharmacy locations across the community. During a ribbon-cutting event at the company's HealthHUB location at 1937 Macdade Boulevard in Folsom, PA, the community celebrated the new, innovative store format that features a broader range of health care services to help patients better manage chronic conditions; more products and services focused on overall health and wellness; and trusted advice and personalized care, all with the ease of walking into a local CVS Pharmacy.

CVS Health began piloting HealthHUB locations last year in Houston, Texas to overwhelming customer satisfaction. The introduction of 13 HealthHUBs in Philadelphia and South New Jersey is part of the company's strategy to scale the program nationally with plans to have up to 1,500 locations operating throughout the U.S. by the end of 2021.

  • Education and counseling for patients with chronic conditions, helping to identify their next best action that enables better health outcomes and reduces medical costs.

  • Pharmacist-led diabetes education counseling and smart device coaching for select blood glucose monitors.

  • Smoking cessation plans for patients and caregivers to help patients quit smoking.

Expanded Services at MinuteClinic

  • Services for minor illnesses and injuries, as well as immunizations, wellness and health checks.

  • Screening, treatment and monitoring for chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

  • Annual diabetic exam, including retinopathy screening.

  • End-to-end sleep apnea solution, including sleep assessment by an independent third party provider.

  • Suite of services to help manage common health conditions for young adults.

  • Phlebotomy services in conjunction with a MinuteClinic visit.

Access to In-Store Community Programs

  • Wellness rooms for group events such as health screenings, nutritional and lifestyle coaching, and benefits education.

HealthHUB locations will also feature an on-site Care Concierge team responsible for customer engagement, including educating customers about new service offerings, helping them navigate in-store services and events, and connecting them to a team of providers.

MinuteClinic Expands Video Visit Offering to Colorado, Illinois and New Jersey

MinuteClinic Video Visits are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week through the CVS Pharmacy App and on-line

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today announced that MinuteClinic, the company’s retail medical clinic, has rolled out its video visit offering in the states of Colorado, Illinois and New Jersey. People in these states with minor illnesses, minor injuries and skin conditions can now seek care through MinuteClinic Video Visits, a telehealth offering. MinuteClinic Video Visits provide patients with access to care 24 hours a day, seven days a week from their mobile device or computer.

“We’re excited to now be able to offer MinuteClinic Video Visits in Colorado, Illinois and New Jersey as we continue to build our national practice for our virtual care offering,” said Sharon Vitti, President, MinuteClinic. “This new MinuteClinic service demonstrates our commitment to delivering high-quality care when and where our patients need it, at prices they can afford; providing people who live and work in these states with access to an innovative, on-demand health care option right from their cell phone or computer.” 

MinuteClinic Video Visits can be used to provide care for patients ages two years and older who are seeking treatment for a minor illness, minor injury, or a skin condition and are initiated through a computer or mobile device, including through the CVS Pharmacy app.  Patients who opt to seek care through a MinuteClinic Video Visit will experience the same high-quality, evidence-based care they receive at traditional MinuteClinic locations inside select CVS Pharmacy and Target stores.

When requesting a video visit, each patient will complete a health questionnaire and be matched to a board-certified health care provider licensed in their state.  Prior to the start of the video-enabled visit, the provider will review the completed questionnaire together with the patient’s medical history. During the MinuteClinic Video Visit, the provider will assess the patient’s condition and determine the appropriate course of treatment following evidence-based clinical care guidelines. For patients who require a prescription as part of their treatment plan, the provider will submit the prescription to the patient’s preferred pharmacy. If it is determined the patient should be seen in person for follow-up care or testing, the provider will recommend that the patient visit a health care provider in their community, such as their primary care provider or a nearby MinuteClinic location.

A MinuteClinic Video Visit costs $59, which is currently payable by credit, debit, FSA and HSA cards. Insurance coverage will be added to the experience in the coming months. The service, first introduced in August 2018, is now available in a total of 40 states - Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia and Wyoming  -- and Washington D.C.  Since MinuteClinic Video Visits launched in August 2018, thousands of Video Visits have been conducted, with more than third of them taking place outside of traditional clinic hours.

Information about initiating a MinuteClinic Video Visit is part of the clinic locator on the MinuteClinic web site for states where the service is available. A patient can also initiate a MinuteClinic Video Visit directly from the CVS Pharmacy app.

Aetna Foundation grant funds healthy initiative for students

With a $250,000 grant from the Aetna Foundation, Jersey Cares, a nonprofit organization committed to creating impactful projects that address critical community-identified needs, launched the Health in the Community Initiative at Sussex Avenue Renew School in Newark, New Jersey. This innovative experiential learning program encourages a culture of health in schools by providing nutrition and fitness education for kindergarten through fifth-grade students.

The Health in the Community Initiative will directly impact students across three Essex County elementary schools with extended benefits to families and peers. Key aspects of the program include the building of greenhouses and gardens at each school, providing onsite gardening programs to instruct the students on the importance of healthy eating, as well as creating enhanced outdoor spaces to encourage active play as classroom and activity-based fitness workshops are provided.

“Health in the Community is a ground-up program that will be evolved through the participation of parents, guardians, teachers, and school leaders, built with the incredibly generous support of the Aetna Foundation and powered by the intention to give children a real, sustainable likelihood of a healthy and brighter future,” said Brian Dean, President and CEO of Jersey Cares. “This initiative is a compelling opportunity to demonstrate what all of us can accomplish by working together as individuals and as organizations.”

The Aetna Foundation, a philanthropic arm of CVS Health, presented the check to Jersey Cares and kicked off the initiative by having more than 30 Aetna and CVS employees volunteer alongside Sussex Avenue students in activities that included raised garden bed assembly, a fit and fun exercise workshop, and school library organization.

For 25 years Jersey Cares has worked to address social determinants that affect the health outcomes of students in Newark Public Elementary schools, helping hundreds of nonprofits recruit and develop volunteers. They expanded their program offering in 2006 to engage nearly 2,000 volunteers and gave slightly over 4,000 hours of service to programs that engaged more than 26,000 volunteers to produce over 89,000 hours of service last year.

“At CVS Health, we know that the path to good health starts locally in our schools and homes. Today we are excited to have the opportunity to work collaboratively with the team at Jersey Cares on this important initiative with the Newark school system,” said Dr. Garth Graham, President of the Aetna Foundation. “The Health in the Community Initiative is an innovative project that will give students and their families’ access to the tools they need to make good decisions when it comes to nutrition and fitness, critical components to establishing long-lasting health and wellness.”

Aetna Foundation’s ‘Spotlight Award’: 10 programs improving community health

Ten U.S. community health programs participating in the Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge received the Aetna Foundation’s “Spotlight Award.” The awardees will receive a $25,000 prize to further support their programs, which will help build sustainable models that can be used in other communities.

“Where a person lives has a profound impact on how they live – particularly when it comes to their health,” said Mark T. Bertolini, the chairman of the Aetna Foundation and chairman and CEO of Aetna. “The Spotlight Award recipients are outstanding examples of how important progress can be made when communities work together to look at the biggest issues facing their neighborhoods and develop healthy, home-grown solutions.”

The Spotlight Awards highlight the early success stories from participants that have demonstrated significant progress since the launch of the Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge.

“Communities invest heavily in local residents’ health and well-being, often serving as a safety net for low-income and vulnerable residents,” said Roy Charles Brooks, president of the National Association of Counties. “We know just as each community is unique, so too are the health challenges they face. These award winners are examples of what can be achieved when counties work with community partners to solve serious, complex public health issues.”

In addition, five community health programs were recognized as Honorable Mention awardees and will receive a $10,000 prize to advance their work. The programs are a part of the Healthy50 — the 50 finalists in the Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge, which will award $1.5 million in prizes to cities and counties that show measurable improvements in health outcomes over the course of several years through cross-sector partnerships.

“Since the Challenge launched, we have seen numerous improvements and advancements in the health of the 50 participating communities,” said Georges C. Benjamin, M.D., executive director of the American Public Health Association. “The Spotlight Awards are a moment to showcase the innovative work being done in cities and counties to address social determinants of health.”

Spotlight Award winners

Bridgeport Coalition United to Reach Equity — Connecticut

Bridgeport Coalition United to Reach Equity, a project designed to help residents of Bridgeport address the lack of fresh fruits and vegetables in their community.

The East End Neighborhood Revitalization Zone’s Pop-up Market leveraged its strategic community partnerships and made a concerted effort to include residents in the entire community engagement process. The process included job creation, types of job training programs and identifying small businesses for development training to improve access to healthy, affordable food in the East End community.

iGrow Food Network — Florida

Tallahassee Leon County is working to address pockets of food source inequality in Tallahassee and Leon County.

The iGrow Food Network is a culturally-competent youth empowerment and urban agriculture entrepreneurship program of the Tallahassee Food Network that leverages community partnerships to focus on education, outreach and community engagement to achieve food security in USDA-designated food deserts by increasing healthy food access.

Live Healthy Little Havana — Florida

Live Healthy Little Havana’s goal is to strengthen community capacity to collaboratively plan and collectively carryout strategies to improve health. Residents are addressing physical activity, primary care and improving the community’s walk score.

West Louisville Outdoor Recreation Initiative — Kentucky

West Louisville Outdoor Recreation Initiative Louisville Metro Government intends to build culture residents connect to nature to improve physical and mental health by increasing physical activity and reducing toxic stress, as well as increasing social cohesion to deter crime.

The West Louisville Outdoor Recreation Initiative created multiple annual paths through its parks department and community partners. The paths allow youth ages 3 to 19 to engage with nature.

The SMART Initiative — New Jersey

The SMART Initiative will reduce the number of sewer overflows to improve water quality in waterways and green infrastructure with a robust focus on community input and guidance.

The Initiative reengages diverse residents through innovative community meetings, forums, large scale events and mobile applications to educate residents on the impact of combined sewer systems and green infrastructure.

Chatham Health Alliance — North Carolina

Chatham Health Alliance is implementing a multilevel initiative targeting obesity, the leading health issue identified in a 2014 Community Health Assessment.

The project leverages partnerships built between the Health Department, the Alliance and numerous stakeholders by embedding a Health in All Policies approach in the Chatham Country Comprehensive Plan, which sets the vision for the county over the next 25 years.

Village HeartBEAT — North Carolina

The Village HeartBEAT program is working to reduce the incidence of heart disease in the Public Health Priority Areas zip codes.

The program works in collaboration with all members of faith-based organizations and leaders to engage and ensure that everyone in Mecklenburg County enjoy good health, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, disability, age or socioeconomic status.

The Heart of Texas Urban Gardening Coalition — Texas

The Heart of Texas Urban Gardening Coalition is helping residents in three zip codes to more easily access and eat healthy foods by promoting current resources of fresh and locally grown food, hosting nutrition education sessions, and utilizing community health workers to connect residents to resources, as well as providing fresh produce delivery.

The Coalition partners with Waco area organizations to create awareness and access to the available fresh local produce by utilizing local vendors and resources, such as the Mobile Farmer’s Market.

Health Collaborative — Virginia

The Health Collaborative has created action teams in four areas: healthy eating, active living, access to health care and cross-cutting approaches.

The Health collaborative focuses on policies, systems and environmental change to support the creation of effective and inclusive policies. The Collaborative is providing access to food and opportunities for physical activity.

Active Design for a Healthier Thurston County — Washington

Thurston County addresses the need for better conditions to support physical activity in key county areas to increase access to and promotion of the trail system.

The project developed and applied web-based tools for data collection and display of information as part of the “walkshed” analysis, which measured the walkability around various locations. The analysis was aimed at boosting physical activity levels.

Honorable mentions

Food is Medicine — Florida

The Food is Medicine program aims to improve the health of people living in food deserts or low-income/low food access areas of St. Petersburg, Florida. The program offers residents access to low cost produce, increases educational opportunities and works to eliminate barriers to health.

The program uses a multifaceted approach to improve health behaviors and influence change. It uses education, community collaboration, biometric screenings and participant incentives. The program also offers evidence-based curriculum in areas such as wellness, nutrition, healthy cooking, budgeting for healthy eating, fitness, childhood obesity prevention, diabetes and other chronic diseases.

Be Well, B’More — Maryland

The goal of Be Well, B’More is to increase physical activity and promote activities unifying Baltimore residents in the city’s outdoor space across neighborhoods.

The program uses trusted local partners within the neighborhoods through new cross-sector collaborations. Community organizations, such as Girl Trek and health Freedom Inc., as well as media partners, such as WBAL and the Baltimore Sun, allowed the program’s reach to expand.

Blue Print for Violence Reduction — New Jersey

Jersey City, New Jersey, reclassified community violence as a health issue. The project aims to promote healthier behaviors as a strategy for reducing violence.

Organizations worked together to focus on improving youth health in new and engaging ways that include non-traditional activities, such as chess and yoga, and violence interruptions, including “Occupy the Block” events.

The North Carolina Healthiest Counties Cross-Sector Team — North Carolina

The North Carolina Healthiest Counties Cross-Sector Team seeks to improve population health, payment reform and health equity in both Cabarrus and Durham Counties by addressing nutrition/food insecurity, physical activity, tobacco use, integrating physical activity “prescriptions” into clinical care and piloting health care delivery and payment reform through community health workers.

The Durham County Health Department and its partners launched public policy changes to encourage greater utilization of Community Health Workers to improve the physical and financial health of the county to improve the physical and financial health of the county.

Walk Works ChesCo! — Pennsylvania

The program’s goal is to promote, educate and empower people to adopt a healthier lifestyle by encouraging residents to walk through the Walk Works ChesCo! Program.

The program reached out to a diverse group of partner organizations to promote the challenge to get community members engaged. The group was actively engaged in planning, implementing and participating in the Challenge. Walk Works routes were announced in Coatesville and Phoenixville.

Collaborating to combat the opioid crisis in Newark and New Jersey

As part of Aetna’s commitment to collaborating on the local level to help fight the opioid epidemic, Aetna participated in the Milken Institute Opioid Crisis Prevention Collaboration in Newark, NJ on August 30.

The meeting convened stakeholders in a dynamic discussion from across New Jersey and beyond, including those from healthcare, education, prevention coalitions, youth groups, government, nonprofit organizations and others to share best practices and expertise to address the epidemic. Aetna participants were present during the meeting, including Aetna’s Chief Medical Officer of Behavioral Health Dr. Mark Friedlander, M.D., M.B.A.

Essex County – which Newark is a part of – leads the state of New Jersey in the number of drug-related overdose deaths, with 156 so far in 2018 and more than 1,200 statewide, according to the NJ Attorney General’s office.

The invite-only meeting was the first large-scale setting for the region on opioids, which brought together the key stakeholders to begin to plan on making a difference for Newark and the region. The meeting looked to heighten awareness and foster cross-entity planning on the current epidemic.

“We stand ready to help communities of all sizes – given the breadth of the opioid dependence issues that we’ve seen across the country,” Friedlander said. “Our levels of expertise can help communities think differently and act swiftly when it comes to the current epidemic and Newark is no exception.

City of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and the Drug Enforcement Administration were also present during the meeting. In addition to special presentations and work groups, the meeting featured information from nonprofits and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

CVS Health names more U.S. cities for HealthHUB expansion

CVS Health today announced plans to bring its new HealthHUB® store format to more U.S. markets in the first half of 2020 as part of a nationwide expansion. The HealthHUB format will come to select CVS Pharmacy locations in the following cities and states: Boston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia.

The company also said it plans to add HealthHUB locations in other major metropolitan markets in Florida, and deploy a limited expansion in Hartford, New York City and Washington D.C., also in the first half of next year.

In June, and as part of the company’s accelerated growth strategy, CVS Health announced plans to open approximately 50 additional HealthHUB locations in Atlanta, Houston, Philadelphia, southern New Jersey and Tampa this year, with up to 1,500 HealthHUB locations planned to be operating by the end of 2021.

Representing a major transformational initiative resulting from the combination of CVS Health and Aetna, HealthHUB is a first-of-its-kind community-based store concept focused on helping customers get well — and stay well — by offering a broader range of healthcare services, wellness products and services, trusted advice and personalized care, all with the ease of walking right into a local CVS Pharmacy.

CVS Health says its expansion plans are predicated on the performance of its 3 HealthHUB pilot stores in Houston, Texas. Early results show pilot stores exceeding initial business projections as measured by increases in front store sales, MinuteClinic visits per day and prescriptions dispensed. Importantly, overall customer satisfaction with pharmacy and front store are also meaningfully higher in HealthHUB locations than the rest of the company’s retail network.

CVS Health announces significant expansion of HealthHUB to deliver a differentiated, consumer health experience

When CVS Health completed its acquisition of Aetna in November 2018, it set a bold course to transform the consumer health care experience in America. Today, the combined company is taking an accelerated step in its work by announcing a significant expansion of HealthHUB locations at CVS Pharmacy stores across the country.

Building on the success and customer response to its HealthHUB pilot in Houston, the company will open additional locations in Houston, Atlanta, Philadelphia, southern New Jersey and Tampa this year, and plans to have 1,500 HealthHUB locations operating by the end of 2021.

“Improving health outcomes starts with transforming the consumer health experience, connecting with people in their communities. Through physical and virtual interactions, we provide convenient, personalized and integrated access to health care support and services,” said Alan Lotvin, M.D., Chief Transformation Officer for CVS Health. “Our HealthHUBs in Houston are generating tremendously positive customer response. The opportunity to engage with a team of in-store and remote colleagues, including pharmacists, nurse practitioners, care managers and support staff resonates with consumers. We’re thrilled to be creating this seamless, long overdue experience that consumers want.”

For the past six months, the company has been piloting three HealthHUB locations in Houston that offer a broader range of health care services, new product categories, digital and on-demand health tools, trusted advice and personalized care. With the new format more than 20% of the store is now dedicated to health services, including new durable medical equipment (DME) and supplies and new product and service combinations for sleep apnea and diabetes care.

With personalized Pharmacy support programs and expanded MinuteClinic services, HealthHUB teams are improving care for patients managing chronic conditions, with a focus on recommending next best clinical actions and driving medical costs savings. The HealthHUB store format also includes a variety of pathways to nutritional health with one-on-one and group counseling delivered by an in-store dietitian, as well as access to weight loss programs.

Acting as the connection point inside the HealthHUB is the care concierge, a newly established role responsible for customer engagement, including educating customers about our new service offerings, helping them navigate the in-store services and events, and connecting them to our in-store providers.

The design of the HealthHUB also includes community spaces and digitally enabled offerings. Wellness rooms are available for CVS professionals and community partners to host group events, including health classes, nutritional seminars and benefits education. In addition, there are learning tables that include iPads for customers to explore health and wellness apps, as well as shop our expanded product selection on cvs.com. 

“Most of the time, I would run into the CVS Pharmacy when I was sick or just needed a few convenience items,” said Jacqueline H., a longtime CVS Pharmacy customer and Houston resident. “I was quite surprised with all of the health and wellness products, support services and community events inside the store. HealthHUB makes you want to be healthy and stay healthy.”

For Kevin Hourican, Executive Vice President, CVS Health and President of CVS Pharmacy, the HealthHUB format marks a forward leap in what’s already a revolution in health care.

NYC Regional Learning Center Recognized for Customized Employment Efforts

CVS Health Workforce Initiatives team members accept the Customized Employment Award for their work to provide training and employment to people with disabilities through our Regional Learning Center in New York City.

CVS Health has been recognized by the Consortium for Customized Learning in New York City for our efforts to provide employment opportunities for people with developmental disabilities.

The Customized Employment Award, given annually by the Consortium, in collaboration with the NYC Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, was presented to CVS Health by Commissioner Victor Calise at an awards ceremony on March 28.

The Consortium, a project of Job Path, Inc., connects New York City businesses to a network of nonprofit agencies engaged in providing training and employment for people with disabilities. The CVS Health Workforce Initiatives team works with four of those agencies — AHRC New York City, Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey (Goodwill NYNJ), Cooke School & Institute and HeartShare Human Services of New York — to create customized training programs and work experiences for people with disabilities.

Additionally, AHRC NY and Goodwill NYNJ are two of several agencies and schools that utilize our New York City-based Regional Learning Center (RLC) mock store to provide customized hands-on training to people with disabilities, allowing them to learn in a less intimidating environment, at their own pace before entering into a work experience program in a retail setting.

Workforce in NYC: Our Ongoing Training and Employment Programs

Since 2017, more than 220 people with disabilities have completed a work experience program within our New York City-based mock store and CVS Pharmacy retail stores, where they learn skills such as customer service, stocking, working within a team setting and conflict resolution. Additionally, the opening of our Brooklyn Transition Center in 2017 has provided another 380 students with disabilities with mock store training opportunities.

The Customized Employment Award is one of several that our RLC in New York City has received recently for its programs. In 2018, CVS Health was named Employer of the Year by Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey (Goodwill NYNJ) for being a leader in the vision to create a world with no employment barriers for individuals with disabilities. And in 2017, the Regional Learning Center (RLC) team was recognized by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Office for People With Disabilities with the Title 1 Sapolin Employment award. The award is given to employers in New York City that provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity to obtain competitive employment.

The training and opportunities provided through our nationwide network of Regional Learning Centers are part of our Abilities In Abundance program, which helps workers with disabilities access the security and prosperity that stable jobs can provide. Led by our Workforce Initiatives team, Abilities In Abundance provides job coaching, mentoring, training and follow-up support.

From Faith-Based Organizations Empowering Healthy Habits to Pop-Up Markets Rebuilding Community Trust: $1.5 Million Awarded to Local Solutions Addressing Social Determinants of Health

HARTFORD, Conn. — As part of an ongoing commitment to supporting community health and wellness, the Aetna Foundation today announced the two grand prize winners of the Healthiest Cities & Counties Challenge (the Challenge). The Mecklenburg County, N.C., Village HeartBEAT program won the $500,000 grand prize from the mid-sized city or county category (population 250,001 600,000) and the Coalition United to Reach Equity (CURE) in Bridgeport, Conn., was awarded the grand prize of $250,000 in the small-sized city or county category (population 65,000 200,000).

The Challenge was launched in partnership with the American Public Health Association (APHA) and the National Association of Counties (NACo), empowering 50 small-to-mid-sized cities and counties nationwide to make measurable, scalable improvements to public health issues in their local communities. Since its inception, the Challenge awarded a total of $1.5 million in grants and prizes to the 50 participating programs to support their efforts to tackle the most pressing health issues facing their communities. In addition to the two grand prize winners, eight programs were designated as runners up in recognition of their achievements, each receiving prizes ranging from $25,000 - $50,000 to help continue their work.

The awarding of the Challenge prizes, funded by the Aetna Foundation, is part of a $100 million commitment by CVS Health and its affiliates to making community health and wellness central to the company's charge for a better world. The new Building Healthier Communities initiative, which will be funded over five years by CVS Health and the CVS Health and Aetna Foundations, builds upon the outstanding tradition of community investment by CVS Health and Aetna and helps to advance CVS Health's purpose of helping people on their path to better health.

"In order to solve our most pressing public health issues, we have to start at the local level acknowledging that the solutions to our problems are as diverse as the communities facing them," said Karen S. Lynch, Executive Vice President, CVS Health and President, Aetna. "These communities are able to get to the heart of their unique challenges and create impactful programs that we hope can be replicated in other communities nationwide."

Over the course of the Challenge, both winners improved local health outcomes with strong, scalable results:

In Mecklenburg County, NC, the African-American population is disproportionately impacted by cardiovascular disease by nearly 20 percent compared to their white counterparts. To combat this, Village HeartBEAT (VHB) activated more than 60 local faith-based organizations to help over 20,000 local residents access health resources to reduce cardiovascular risk. As a result, VHB reduced smoking in the community from 17.4 percent to 13.9 percent and obesity rates from 70 percent to 64.7 percent.

Bridgeport (CT) CURE/ East End Neighborhood Revitalization Zone (NRZ) addressed decades of food insecurity and public mistrust through development of a pop-up market in a documented food desert, improving availability of healthy foods, living wage jobs and sparking greater community cohesiveness. Over the past three years, Bridgeport CURE secured more than 53,000 volunteer hours and leveraged strong cross-sector partnerships to overcome major policy obstacles.

"While every community faces unique health issues, we know a lot can be accomplished when cities and counties join forces," said APHA executive director Georges C. Benjamin. "It is our hope that these two programs, along with the rest of the Challenge participants, will inspire others and serve as models of success and progress for communities around the country who face similar health issues."

The first cohort of Challenge participants were chosen out of hundreds of city governments, local municipalities, health departments, educational institutions and other entities that applied to enter the competition. Improvements were measured around at least one of five domains: healthy behaviors, community safety, built environment, social/economic factors and environmental exposures. The Challenge winners and runners up were selected with assistance from an Advisory Council of public health leaders including elected officials, professors and physicians. RAND Corporation was tapped to evaluate the improvements in social determinants of health achieved and identify the most promising practices with potential for replication.

"Our winners and runners up have demonstrated the ability of counties to transform the communities they support," said NACo president Greg Cox. "Organizations and leaders at the county level are in a unique position to champion the needs of local residents and join community partners in the effort to improve health outcomes for all residents to make a positive health impact."

With a presence in nearly 10,000 communities across the United States, CVS Health recognizes the importance of fighting the opioid epidemic at the local level, with local solutions.

That’s why, among the many ways CVS Health is working to mitigate the epidemic, we have committed funding to organizations across the country to support prevention, treatment and recovery efforts.

Supporting Community Health Centers Nationwide

In September 2017, CVS Health announced an enterprise-wide, multi-pronged approach to help find solutions to the national opioid abuse epidemic. Those efforts included the nationwide expansion of our drug disposal collection program, an increase in the availability of naloxone without a prescription and the enhancement of our pain medication utilization management program to ensure prescription opioids are used properly.

Also included was a $2-million commitment by the CVS Health Foundation, to the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), to increase access to medication-assisted treatment and other recovery services at community health centers around the country. To-date, we have funded more than 20 community health centers through this program.

Among the recipients of that grant support were:

  • Total Health Care in Baltimore, a community health center dedicated to supporting opioid addiction recovery was awarded $85,000 to develop and implement a trauma informed care model which will increase participation in its substance abuse treatment program.

  • The Greater Lawrence Family Health Center, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, received $80,000 to develop a protocol to train their team on the screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) approach to addiction. SBIRT is an evidence-based practice used to identify, reduce and prevent misuse and abuse of alcohol and drugs.

  • Four California community health centers received a total of $330,000 to increase access to opioid addiction treatment and recovery services.

Expanding Community-Level Support

In addition, CVS Health has awarded grants to several other non-profit organizations nationwide that are tackling this public health challenge.

These grant recipients include:

  • Three New Hampshire non-profit organizations received $60,000 in grants to address and prevent opioid abuse.

  • New Jersey-based Morris Country Prevention Is Key was given funding from CVS Health to host two peer recovery specialist training cohorts. The training provided 55 specialists the opportunity to share knowledge in one-on-one, group, emergency room and correctional facility interventions, as well as become law enforcement response assistants throughout the state.

  • In Ohio, two clinics – Neighborhood Family Practice in Cleveland and Rocking Horse Children’s Health Center in Springfield – received a total of $100,000 for programs supporting patients and families struggling with substance abuse.

  • Two Arizona non-profit organizations, ICAN and El Rio Health, received a total of $115,000 from CVS Health to support their prevention and medication education programs.

  • And in CVS Health’s home community of Rhode Island, where the company’s corporate headquarters are located, opioid-related grants have been awarded to the United Way, Community Care Alliance, the Rhode Island Disaster Medical Assistance Team, RI PBS, and Bradley Hospital.

CVS Health is committed to helping put an end to the national opioid abuse epidemic, in part by connecting those who are struggling with addiction with the resources they need to regain good health. In supporting community partners through grants like these, CVS Health is working to expand access to the community-level prevention, treatment and recovery programs that serve as the frontline in this crisis.
