CVS Health increases access to flu vaccines in communities of need

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today announced it is supporting a nearly $3 million commitment to increasing access to flu vaccines for underserved communities throughout the country. Through its Project Health initiative, CVS Health is contributing $2 million to the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics (NAFC) to help distribute flu vaccines to those who may otherwise not have access. Additionally, the company is working with Bank of America and General Motors to support increased access to flu vaccines in even more communities nationwide.

"Underserved communities have been hit particularly hard by COVID-19, so supporting flu prevention in these communities is even more important," said Eileen Howard Boone, SVP of Corporate Social Responsibility and Philanthropy, CVS Health. "Through our work with Free Clinics, and in teaming up with Bank of America and General Motors, we aim to expand our reach to individuals who may not otherwise have access to flu vaccines."

CVS Health's Project Health flu initiative will support free and charitable clinics in areas across the country, helping clinics increase capacity to provide flu vaccinations. Clinics in California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas will receive support. These grants extend the mission of Project Health which aims to break down the barriers for people to access quality and affordable health care.

"This program will allow clinics to distribute needed flu vaccines to people in their communities that otherwise might not have access to vaccinations."

In addition to contributing to the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics, CVS Health is working with Bank of America and General Motors to reach even more individuals in these areas of significant need. Bank of America is funding vouchers for free flu vaccines, redeemable at CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations in seven select cities: Boston, Detroit, Dallas, Jacksonville, Oklahoma City, Phoenix and Greater Washington, D.C. Additionally, General Motors is funding vouchers for free flu vaccines, redeemable at CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic locations in the Los Angeles area and across southern California.

"We are committed to working with the public and nonprofit sectors as one global community to address this health crisis and to provide the necessary resources to protect our most vulnerable populations," said Andrew Plepler, head of Environmental, Social and Governance at Bank of America. "Offering access to free flu prevention complements our other health-focused efforts including supplying PPE, supporting community-based testing and care, addressing food insecurity and providing access to mental health resources."

Flu prevention is critical during the COVID-19 pandemic so hospitals are not overwhelmed with cases of both COVID-19 and flu. And with seasonal flu outbreaks beginning as early as October and lasting as late as May, it is never too late to get a flu shot as it is the best defense against getting the flu. Getting a flu shot is one way to help protect individual health, especially for those who are more vulnerable to serious flu illnesses and people with certain chronic health conditions, like diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Collaboration addresses the ongoing health needs of Aetna Medicare Advantage members with chronic conditions

NEW YORK CITY, NY — Aetna®, a CVS Health® company (NYSE: CVS), and Landmark Health and its affiliated medical groups (Landmark) announced today a new relationship to bring physician-led  services into the homes of Aetna Medicare Advantage members living in New York with chronic health conditions. Service areas will be focused in the New York City boroughs and Long Island and further extend to Albany, Rochester, and Buffalo.

Members who are eligible for the program will receive access to health services in their homes. Examples of the types of care they can get are acute and urgent services such as wound care, lab draws, catheter maintenance and adherence to medication therapies, as well as medication management, home safety checks, and health screenings. The personalized services also include member access to 24/7 availability from a dedicated Landmark health care provider. Ongoing nutrition, medication therapy, emotional and mental health support will help ensure members receive a comprehensive continuum of care. As part of that care, in-home providers will also share data with members’ primary care physicians.

"This new approach identifies members with multiple chronic conditions and provides stronger in-home physician support in addition to their current primary care physician relationship,” said Lauren Casalveri, Aetna vice president and chief Medicare officer in New York. “This collaboration allows members to remain safely in their homes and provides optimal treatment for their conditions.”

The alliance reflects one of the key goals of value-based care, which is to drive better health outcomes at lower costs. Addressing food insecurity in local communities

Families across the country are facing significant challenges as they work to keep people safe and healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, for many families, these health concerns are coming hand-in-hand with an unfamiliar worry: food insecurity. Lost jobs, reduced incomes and loss of access to school lunches have left many struggling with having enough to eat. Across the country, local nonprofits are stepping up with expanded services and innovative approaches to meet the sudden surge of need in their communities — and CVS Health is joining them to help. CVS Health and The CVS Health Foundation have provided more than $900,000 to organizations in local communities working to provide food to vulnerable populations, especially school-aged children, seniors, and the uninsured.

A $250,000 grant to Feeding America supported efforts to pack and deploy emergency food boxes to high-need areas across the country, including Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, New York and Washington. These boxes will help local food banks provide children, families, and seniors with the food and nutrition they need, even as the need for food assistance increases.

Many other organizations have developed entirely new approaches to respond to the unique needs created by COVID-19 and CVS Health is proud to support this work in the communities we serve. In Kansas City, Missouri, Feed Northland Kids received a grant of $20,000 to develop Community Food Kits. With shelf-stable foods, these kits are provided to families through in-school pantries, which will help address food insecurity among school-age children. And in Austin, Texas, a $25,000 grant to the Central Texas Food Bank helped the organization shift to a drive-through model to allow clients to still receive food while ensuring safety for clients, staff, and volunteers. Safety is a top concern at many nonprofits; Community Servings in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, used a $15,000 grant to streamline operations and continue to distribute more than 2,000 food boxes in April, even without the assistance of the as many as 75 volunteers they previously relied on each day.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created an unprecedented need and continues to present unique challenges in meeting that need. At CVS Health, we’re proud to support the local organizations that are rising to the challenge to continue to feed their communities.

Meeting the nutritional needs of at-risk populations

People facing serious illnesses often have specific dietary needs to support their health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, those needs are compounded in many ways. CVS Health and the CVS Health Foundation are working to support local nonprofit organizations across the country to address the challenges presented by the pandemic, with a particular emphasis on organizations helping people on their path to better health by meeting their unique nutritional needs. We have awarded nearly $200,000 in grants to support 13 community organizations across the country, providing medically-tailored meals for individuals with serious illnesses.

One such organization is God’s Love We Deliver in New York City, a community particularly hard-hit by the pandemic. Through a grant of $15,000, our support will help them continue to deliver their medically tailored meals directly to clients’ homes while accommodating the changing needs created by COVID-19. CVS Health also awarded $100,000 to the California Food is Medicine Coalition, repurposing a portion of its three-year, $40 million commitment to invest in California’s health care delivery system to respond to the pandemic. This grant will support six local sites across the state as they expand their meal services in response to the pandemic.

“The grant from CVS Health enables the six California Food is Medicine Coalition (CalFIMC) agencies to increase their services — delivering thousands of nutritious meals to low-income and medically fragile Californians who are sheltered in-place and at great risk of contracting COVID-19 and more vulnerable to complications and death,” said Ann Thrupp, Director of CalFIMC. “We greatly appreciate the support CVS Health has provided CalFIMC to help respond to urgent community food needs for highly vulnerable people during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Funding for these organizations, and others like them in highly impacted areas, meet a critical need. With the support of CVS Health, these local nonprofits will continue to navigate these challenges and ensure that nutritious food gets to the members of their communities who need it most.

CVS Health and its foundations support community and employee needs amid COVID-19 pandemic

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today announced the company and its foundations are giving more than $1 million in new investments to address food insecurity and other community needs in response to ongoing challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. The CVS Health Foundation will also match up to $1 million in employee contributions to the CVS Health Employee Relief Fund, a public charity supporting colleagues during unanticipated and unavoidable financial hardships and emergencies. The fund will make $1,000 grants available to employees to address qualifying emergency needs related to the pandemic. CVS Health is also easing programmatic restrictions on certain grants made by the company and its foundations in 2019 and 2020 to give nonprofit organizations more flexibility to use the donated funds to address the most pressing needs.

“Supporting the communities we serve and building on the steps CVS Health has taken to support its employees aligns with our purpose of helping people on their path to better health,” said Eileen Howard Boone, SVP of Corporate Social Responsibility and Philanthropy for CVS Health, and President of the CVS Health and Aetna Foundations. “We’re also focused on much-needed flexibility for our partners, including loosening existing grant guidelines whenever possible.”

CVS Health and its foundations are addressing community needs with support for United Ways and other community organizations responding to the pandemic. Much of that support is dedicated to Rhode Island, Connecticut and Arizona, where many of the company’s employees are based. The CVS Health Foundation has provided $100,000 to the United Way of Rhode Island to support the Rhode Island COVID-19 Response Fund, and the Aetna Foundation has provided $100,000 to support the Connecticut United Ways’ Neighbors in Need Emergency Response Fund. In addition, the company has provided $50,000 to the Arizona Community Foundation’s COVID-19 Community Response Fund.

CVS Health is also providing $250,000 to support the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization, Feeding America, which is responding to the pandemic by distributing emergency food boxes to its network of 200 food banks across the country to support vulnerable populations. The company is further addressing food insecurity with support for local food banks and nutrition-focused nonprofit organizations in many states, including some of the hardest-hit such as New York, California and Washington.

“There are many people in the communities we serve who lack access to basic needs, including food and personal hygiene products. We’re supporting organizations of all sizes that have the infrastructure in place to provide relief in the safest way possible,” said Boone.

CVS Pharmacy statement on COVID-19 exposure at Queensbury store

CVS Pharmacy was notified on March 7 that the New York State Health Department confirmed that a pharmacist who works at our store at 5 Main Street in Queensbury, NY has tested positive for COVID-19. He is not currently symptomatic.

We are in close contact and coordination with the Warren County Health Department and are following their infectious disease response protocols. The Health Department has informed us that pharmacy patients are considered being at low risk and the prescriptions dispensed from this store do not represent a risk to our customers. As a matter of precaution, we are assisting the state and county health departments contact patients who received prescription medication on the days our pharmacist worked at this location (March 2 and March 4) so that they can monitor their health and, if they choose, return and replace medications they were dispensed on those days.

The health and well-being of our employees and customers is our top priority. Our pharmacist and his co-workers who were exposed have been placed under quarantine consistent with CDC guidelines and will be on paid leave. The store was closed for cleaning in order to disinfect and sterilize the premises following our established protocols and CDC guidelines.

The store reopened on Sunday, March 8. All other CVS locations in the area are open during their normal hours. CVS Pharmacy also offers prescription home delivery as an option for patients.

Aetna Announces the 2019 Voices of Health Competition Winners

HARTFORD, Conn. Aetna, a CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) company, today announced the winners of the 2019 Voices of Health competition, a celebration of grassroots non-profit organizations across the country that are working to address social determinants of health in their communities.

The 102 participating non-profits promote health and well-being by addressing a wide range of community issues such as childhood obesity, access to affordable prescriptions and health care services, and providing food to the homeless, just to name a few. Each organization launched an online voting campaign – soliciting votes via their social media channels as well as through other marketing strategies - in their respective communities to compete for a $20,000 prize, among other prizes. In total, Aetna awarded $410K in grants to community organizations through the 2019 Voices of Health competition.

“The purpose of this competition is to support local non-profits and their missions to improve health and well-being in our communities, who go above and beyond where they can, and the winners this year do just that,” said Floyd Green, vice president of Aetna Community Affairs. “We believe that addressing health concerns outside of the doctor’s office is crucial to overall health and well-being and the reason why these organizations are singled out for their achievements. Aetna Voices of Health Competition Kicks Off Today

HARTFORD, Conn. Aetna, a CVS Health company, announced today that online voting is underway for the 2019 "Aetna Voices of Health" program at www.aetnavoicesofhealth.com. Voices of Health is a competition and celebration of grassroots non-profit organizations across the country that are working to address social determinants of health in their communities.

CVS Health names more U.S. cities for HealthHUB expansion

CVS Health today announced plans to bring its new HealthHUB® store format to more U.S. markets in the first half of 2020 as part of a nationwide expansion. The HealthHUB format will come to select CVS Pharmacy locations in the following cities and states: Boston, Dallas/Fort Worth, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia.

The company also said it plans to add HealthHUB locations in other major metropolitan markets in Florida, and deploy a limited expansion in Hartford, New York City and Washington D.C., also in the first half of next year.

In June, and as part of the company’s accelerated growth strategy, CVS Health announced plans to open approximately 50 additional HealthHUB locations in Atlanta, Houston, Philadelphia, southern New Jersey and Tampa this year, with up to 1,500 HealthHUB locations planned to be operating by the end of 2021.

Representing a major transformational initiative resulting from the combination of CVS Health and Aetna, HealthHUB is a first-of-its-kind community-based store concept focused on helping customers get well — and stay well — by offering a broader range of healthcare services, wellness products and services, trusted advice and personalized care, all with the ease of walking right into a local CVS Pharmacy.

CVS Health says its expansion plans are predicated on the performance of its 3 HealthHUB pilot stores in Houston, Texas. Early results show pilot stores exceeding initial business projections as measured by increases in front store sales, MinuteClinic visits per day and prescriptions dispensed. Importantly, overall customer satisfaction with pharmacy and front store are also meaningfully higher in HealthHUB locations than the rest of the company’s retail network.

NYC Regional Learning Center Recognized for Customized Employment Efforts

CVS Health Workforce Initiatives team members accept the Customized Employment Award for their work to provide training and employment to people with disabilities through our Regional Learning Center in New York City.

CVS Health has been recognized by the Consortium for Customized Learning in New York City for our efforts to provide employment opportunities for people with developmental disabilities.

The Customized Employment Award, given annually by the Consortium, in collaboration with the NYC Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities, was presented to CVS Health by Commissioner Victor Calise at an awards ceremony on March 28.

The Consortium, a project of Job Path, Inc., connects New York City businesses to a network of nonprofit agencies engaged in providing training and employment for people with disabilities. The CVS Health Workforce Initiatives team works with four of those agencies — AHRC New York City, Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey (Goodwill NYNJ), Cooke School & Institute and HeartShare Human Services of New York — to create customized training programs and work experiences for people with disabilities.

Additionally, AHRC NY and Goodwill NYNJ are two of several agencies and schools that utilize our New York City-based Regional Learning Center (RLC) mock store to provide customized hands-on training to people with disabilities, allowing them to learn in a less intimidating environment, at their own pace before entering into a work experience program in a retail setting.

Workforce in NYC: Our Ongoing Training and Employment Programs

Since 2017, more than 220 people with disabilities have completed a work experience program within our New York City-based mock store and CVS Pharmacy retail stores, where they learn skills such as customer service, stocking, working within a team setting and conflict resolution. Additionally, the opening of our Brooklyn Transition Center in 2017 has provided another 380 students with disabilities with mock store training opportunities.

The Customized Employment Award is one of several that our RLC in New York City has received recently for its programs. In 2018, CVS Health was named Employer of the Year by Goodwill Industries of Greater New York and Northern New Jersey (Goodwill NYNJ) for being a leader in the vision to create a world with no employment barriers for individuals with disabilities. And in 2017, the Regional Learning Center (RLC) team was recognized by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Office for People With Disabilities with the Title 1 Sapolin Employment award. The award is given to employers in New York City that provide individuals with disabilities the opportunity to obtain competitive employment.

The training and opportunities provided through our nationwide network of Regional Learning Centers are part of our Abilities In Abundance program, which helps workers with disabilities access the security and prosperity that stable jobs can provide. Led by our Workforce Initiatives team, Abilities In Abundance provides job coaching, mentoring, training and follow-up support.
