Premium Vision powers the telehealth technology which allows customers to easily renew their contact lens prescription online from the comfort of home

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health, today announced the launch of QuickRenew, an online contact lens prescription renewal tool powered by technology from Premium Vision currently available on the CVS Optical website. Customers can use the easy and convenient tool to renew their prescription in minutes with an independent ophthalmologist and order contact lenses to be shipped to their home.

"We continue to adapt and evolve our digital offerings in response to the pandemic. This addition to our optical site gives customers a new way to fulfill an important health care need safely and confidently from the comfort of their homes," said Michele Driscoll, Vice President of Customer Engagement, ExtraCare, Digital, & Promotion, CVS Health. "This is especially important at a time when customers are trying to limit their interactions or are finding it difficult to schedule time with an optometrist. Digital screening takes less than 15-20 minutes, and information is reviewed by a licensed independent ophthalmologist."

The QuickRenew online prescription renewal service is currently available in 32 states, where permitted. Patients must be age 18 55, have been fitted for contact lenses in the past, have had a full eye exam within last four years and have healthy eye history.

Each pair of glasses includes premium polycarbonate lenses that provide UV and scratch protection, and lenses can be upgraded to include blue light filtering to reduce eye strain and fatigue from digital devices.

CVS Health to hire 15,000 across the U.S. in fourth quarter

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today announced that it is recruiting qualified candidates to fill 15,000 jobs. These new and existing positions will help the company continue to respond to the needs of communities across the country during the fall and winter months when the incidences of COVID-19 and the flu are expected to increase.

More than 10,000 of the new roles are for full- and part-time licensed pharmacy technicians at CVS Pharmacy locations and will be filled as soon as possible, helping increase support for patients and fellow pharmacy professionals. Many of the positions are temporary with the possibility of becoming permanent. 

The company is also marking Pharmacy Technician Day on October 20th by advocating for an expanded scope of practice that would allow trained pharmacy technicians to administer COVID-19 vaccinations under the supervision of an immunization-certified pharmacist. As an integral part of the health care system, pharmacy technicians can help fill the urgent need to safely and quickly scale distribution of a vaccine and extend the capacity of the health care workforce to address the pandemic.

“Additional team members typically are needed every flu season,” said Lisa Bisaccia, Chief Human Resources Officer, CVS Health. “However, we’re estimating a much greater need for trained pharmacy technicians this year given the continued presence of COVID-19 in our communities. These jobs offer a rewarding career opportunity, with flexible hours, advancement potential and a supportive environment while helping people on their path to better health.” 

Working under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist, CVS Health pharmacy technicians continue to serve as a trusted resource for patients by processing prescriptions, dispensing medications, providing information to customers or health professionals and performing administrative tasks. They also are vital to administering COVID-19 tests at more than 4,000 drive-thru testing sites at select CVS Pharmacy locations across the country. In this role, they are critical in helping to curb the spread of the virus and expand access to care, particularly in underserved communities.

Additional on-site roles that are part of the company’s recruiting effort include pharmacists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, member benefit case professionals, and distribution center employees.

Finally, to support the CVS Caremark and CVS Specialty pharmacy businesses, the company is recruiting for several thousand work-from-home customer service representative positions across the country, with hundreds of openings in several markets, including: Indianapolis, IN; Kansas City, MO; Knoxville, TN; Mt. Prospect, IL; Orlando, FL; Pittsburgh, PA; and  San Antonio, TX. These full-time opportunities start at 30 hours per week and offer a flexible schedule for people seeking to quickly get back to work. Heart At Work: Virginia Vannoy

The sign said: “Take what you need, donate what you can.” Soup, canned vegetables and shampoo crowded together on a table on Virginia Vannoy’s front lawn. Nearby, a refrigerator chilled eggs and milk.

In March, when the pandemic was at its peak in their small town of Homewood, Pennsylvania, Virginia, an Aetna Healthy Outcomes Supervisor, and her husband Brian, did something extraordinary – feed their neighbors.

“Many are elderly, some in poor health. At the time they were too frightened of the coronavirus to leave their homes and shop for groceries,” says Virginia. “We had to do something.”

The couple began by pulling food from their pantry and buying other goods. “The first few days nobody came and we thought, ‘Oh no, this isn’t going to work.’ Then we noticed people arriving early in the morning and later in the evening,” she explains.

News of their good deed soon got around.

“A butcher who went to school with Brian donated meat, others gave gift cards for us to purchase supplies. Someone, we still don’t know who, dropped off a ton of snack food. It was heartwarming,” Virginia says.

“Virginia always thinks of others and brings that same spirit to her job,” explains Healthy Outcomes Manager Michelle Bilgera. “Currently, her team helps provide Medicare members with home kits to screen for cancer and monitor diabetes – something that’s crucial, as many members are learning safer ways to access care in the pandemic.”

The Care Continues

In June, when weather was too hot for a table outside, the couple worried about shutting down but the Victory Family Church offered a solution. Each week, Brian drives a half hour to gather fresh produce from its pantry and the couple make deliveries around town – typically 70 or more crates. Brian then heads to his night shift as a store manager, Virginia returns to work.

“You just don’t see this kindness anymore, they won’t even take gas money,” shares Florence (not her real name). “My husband didn’t work for three months and couldn’t get unemployment benefits because he owns the business. This absolutely helps us.”

So, where does this great generosity of heart come from? “It’s simple, I grew up on a farm and we had the attitude, ‘If we have a loaf of bread and you don’t, we’ll give you half,’” says Virginia with a smile.

Thank you, Virginia, for opening your heart to your community at home and at work.

CVS Health plans to double its COVID-19 drive-thru test sites to a total of more than 4,000 across the country

Company has administered three million COVID-19 tests since March

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today announced plans to add more than 2,000 new COVID-19 drive-thru test sites at select CVS Pharmacy locations across the country to support the company's ongoing efforts to increase access to testing and help slow the spread of the virus.

CVS Health currently manages the largest number of independently run COVID-19 test sites in the country, and with these new locations the company expects to have more than 4,000 operating by mid-October. The new locations will open in waves over the next several weeks and build on the company's ability to support testing in 33 states and Washington, DC, beginning with the opening of more than 400 sites this Friday.

"Since opening our first test site in March, we've been able to quickly adapt to the changing landscape in order to make it easier for people in the communities we serve to access testing," said Jon Roberts, Chief Operating Officer, CVS Health and acting President, CVS Pharmacy. "We recognize the critical role testing plays in helping to manage the spread of the virus and are incredibly proud of how our teams have responded to this need while continuing to take care of our customers, clients and patients."

Self-swab tests are no cost to patients and available to individuals meeting Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria.COVID-19 tests are no cost to patients with insurance or through a program for the uninsured funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Patients must register in advance at CVS.com to schedule an appointment. A parent or legal guardian must complete the online registration for all minor patients, and patients 12 15 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian when they come to be tested.

When arriving for testing, patients are asked to follow signage or the instructions of the staff onsite. Procedures vary by location and patients may be directed to stay in their cars and proceed to either the pharmacy drive-thru window or a parking space or tent located in the parking lot or, in very limited locations, to enter a CVS store. Patients will be provided with a test kit and given instructions, and a CVS Pharmacy team member will observe the self-swab process.

Currently, most test results from specimens collected at CVS test sites across the country will be available within 2 to 3 days.

CVS Health encourages patients to pick up medications and supplies as Hurricane Sally approaches

Across CVS Health, we’re actively preparing for Hurricane Sally’s landfall in the Gulf Coast region. Our priority is the safety of our employees, customers, and members, and we’re committed to providing our communities access to the products and services they need to prepare for the storm.  Our stores comply with all local evacuation orders and we’ll re-open any closed stores as soon as it is safe to do so. If a store is forced to close for two or more days, the pharmacy’s phone lines will be rerouted to a nearby open CVS Pharmacy so patients may continue to access their prescriptions.

As Hurricane Sally approaches, CVS Pharmacy has been reaching out to its patients via text message and email where possible to remind them to refill prescriptions. In addition, through CVS Caremark, CVS Health’s pharmacy benefit manager, the company has activated a process to provide one-time emergency refills of a 10-day supply of medication for plan members in impacted areas. Patients within the emergency area taking specialty medications filled by CVS Specialty will be contacted to discuss alternate delivery arrangements, if needed. And through our Aetna Business Unit, our clinical response teams have expanded their engagement with Medicare and Commercial members in potentially impacted counties in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida to ensure member safety, access to emergency services and continuity of care.

CVS Health also offers the following tips for assuring prescription needs are met for those potentially impacted by Hurricane Sally:

  • Follow local evacuation orders. Get to a safe location first and refill your medications at the nearest pharmacy. This allows you to avoid potentially long lines at your local pharmacy, and you won’t need to needlessly delay your evacuation.

  • Take a waterproof bag with your current medication – even if the bottle is empty. The information on the prescription label will help pharmacy staff with refill requests. Heat, humidity and sunlight can degrade the effectiveness of medicine, so try to protect it from extreme weather conditions.

  • Keep a written record of your current prescriptions in your valuable papers files. If you are taking several prescription drugs, it’s an especially good idea to keep a record of your current dosage and doctor’s contact information.

Company adding more than 120 new test sites at select CVS Pharmacy locations

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — As part of its comprehensive effort to increase access to COVID-19 testing in order to help slow the spread of the virus, CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today announced that children age 12 years and older are eligible for testing at the more than 2,000 test sites located at select CVS Pharmacy drive-thru testing locations, starting Friday, September 11. In addition, more than 120 new test sites will open Friday at CVS Pharmacy drive-thru locations across the country.

"With schools opening across the country, there's an urgent need to make testing for minors more readily available," said Troyen Brennan, MD, Chief Medical Officer, CVS Health. "In response, we've implemented a system that allows parents or guardians to register and accompany their children for a self-swab test close to home."

In recent weeks, CVS Health has expanded its network of independent third-party lab partners in an effort to help improve turnaround time for the delivery of test results. As a result, the majority of test results from specimens collected at CVS test sites across the country will generally be available within 2 to 3 days.

Heart At Work: Nancy Simonelli

Bill Steel, an 83-year-old living in The Villages, a 15,000-person retirement community in Lady Lake, Florida, likes a lot of things about his local CVS Pharmacy. It’s clean and well stocked. That makes for one-stop shopping instead of multiple trips elsewhere – especially important since he’s in the most vulnerable age group for COVID-19 and Florida has seen a huge resurgence of cases in recent weeks. 

“CVS Pharmacy prices are competitive to what I pay at the supermarket. I use my ExtraCare card and that saves me too,” explains Bill, who visits two to three times weekly. “The staff is always friendly and helpful and Nancy always takes time to talk.” 

Nancy is Nancy Simonelli, a retail store associate who has been a CVS Health colleague for more than 20 years. She knows Bill and many other customers by their first name and makes sure their shopping trips include friendly small talk. A fellow retiree and member of the community, she understands that for some seniors those quick chats may be the only conversation they have that day.   
   
“They’ll come in for their medications, talk to the pharmacist, and then visit with us,” Nancy says. “They’re glad to see you and you’re glad to see them.” 

Those small interactions can make a big difference. Many seniors, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic began, are dealing with social isolation, a condition studies have shown can be as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. 

As Christopher Ciano, President of Medicare for Aetna, reminds us, it’s even more important that our aging loved ones don’t feel they’re alone during this time. 

Nancy understands. A New Jersey native, she moved to Central Florida with her husband after retiring and knows the community.  She understands customers, like Bill, may have lost a spouse and do their own shopping. Family may live far away. 

“I’ll learn about their children and grandkids.” Sometimes she’ll hear a familiar accent and ask, “What part of New Jersey are you from?” 

Like other CVS Pharmacy locations, things have changed. Colleagues and customers alike are required to wear masks. Where once there was a handshake, or a pat on the back, now there are air high-fives.  

What hasn’t changed is colleagues like Nancy and the social connection their friendly chats provide customers like Bill. Thank you – and a big “air high-five” – for bringing your heart to work, Nancy.

Heart At Work: Motria Lusk

"When our patients are lost, it is our job to help them find their way to better health," says Pharmacist Motria Lusk

Ten years ago, Jennie and Eric Maike’s three-month-old son Christian had open heart surgery. They were discharged from the hospital with six prescriptions and were at a loss for how to give Christian, who has Down Syndrome, the correct dosages.

Jennie explains, “I realized the dosages were in milligrams, not milliliters.  Exhausted and scared, I went to our CVS Pharmacy for help. Pharmacist Motria Lusk converted all of the dosages for me. I can’t even begin to tell you the emotional state I was in. Motria was my saving grace that day.” 

With Christian’s health issues, there are many times Jennie’s been nervous about his medications or she needs help determining insurance coverage. She is so grateful for Motria and her team in Sylvan Lake, Michigan, that she has twice sent emails of appreciation to CVS.

In response, Motria says, “Jennie is my hero. She is so calm. She never complains and has tremendous courage. She puts a smile on my face.” 

A few years ago, Jennie was diagnosed with breast cancer. “Again, I go to my pharmacy with a handful of prescriptions after my first oncology appointment. I remember handing them to Motria, she read them, and walked out from the counter to hug me. I tear up thinking of her kindness,” Jennie recalls.

Motria noticed that the combination of new medications would create an issue with one of Jennie’s current prescriptions. Jennie admits she had forgotten to tell the oncologist about this medication. Jennie adds, “If Motria hadn’t noticed, it could have caused some nasty complications. I know this is the job of a pharmacist, but the way Motria makes her customers feel is just incredible.”

Motria insists this is how she, Pharmacy Manager Helene Little and all the pharmacists and pharmacy techs at her store treat every patient. 

Helene explains, “Motria is very nurturing toward our patients and our techs. We always explain to the techs why people may act a certain way and why we do certain things in our jobs. We are a team and a family.”

“When our patients are lost, it is our job to help them find their way to better health,” Motria concludes.

CVS Health enhances prescription drug security and disposal in Massachusetts to help promote safer communities

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — As part of an ongoing commitment to helping build healthier and safer communities, CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) today announced the expansion of two initiatives aimed at reducing the potential for misuse and diversion of prescription medications in Massachusetts.

CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health, completed the installation of time delay safe technology in all its 446 Massachusetts locations, including those in Target stores. The safes are anticipated to help prevent pharmacy robberies and the resulting diversion of controlled substance medications, including opioid medications such as oxycodone and hydrocodone by electronically delaying the time it takes for pharmacy employees to open the safe. In addition, the safes are anticipated to help CVS Pharmacy ensure the safety and well-being of its customers and employees.

Further enhancing the company's efforts to help prevent opioid diversion and misuse, CVS Pharmacy also announced the addition of 50 new safe medication disposal units placed in select stores throughout Massachusetts. The new units join another 106 secure disposal kiosks previously installed in CVS Pharmacy locations in the state and another 43 units previously donated to Massachusetts law enforcement agencies. CVS Pharmacy plans to install an additional 6 units in stores by year-end.

"While our nation and our company focus on COVID-19 treatment, testing and other measures to prevent community transmission of the virus, the misuse of prescription drugs remains an ongoing challenge in Massachusetts and elsewhere that warrants our continued attention," said John Hering, Region Director for CVS Health. "These steps to reduce the theft and diversion of opioid medications bring added security to our stores and more disposal options for our communities."

Time delay safes help reduce pharmacy robberies

CVS Health first implemented time delay safe technology in 2015 in CVS Pharmacy locations across Indianapolis, a city experiencing a high volume of pharmacy robberies at the time. The company saw a 70 percent decline in pharmacy robberies among the Indianapolis stores where time delay safes had been installed.

Since then, the company has introduced time delay safes in 4,760 CVS Pharmacy stores across 15 states and the District of Columbia, resulting in a 50 percent decline in robberies at CVS pharmacies in those local communities.

The time delay function cannot be overridden and is designed to serve as a deterrent to would-be pharmacy robbers whose goal is to enter and exit their robbery targets as quickly as possible. All CVS Pharmacy locations in Massachusetts with time delay safes display visible signage warning that time delay safes are in use to prevent on-demand access to controlled substance narcotics.

50 Massachusetts safe medication disposal units added

The expansion of CVS Pharmacy's safe medication disposal program in 50 Massachusetts stores continues the company's commitment to providing increased year-round access to safer, easier and more convenient options for removing unneeded prescription drugs from the home.

"When patients leave unused medications especially opioids in a medicine cabinet, there is a risk they might be misused, diverted or come in contact with unsupervised children, other family members or guests in the home," said Tom Davis, Vice President of Pharmacy Professional Services at CVS Health. "It is critical that medications are taken only as prescribed, and we believe safe medication disposal is an important way to help prevent misuse."

In 2020, the company is adding an additional 1,000 in-store safe medication disposal units to the 2,500 units currently in CVS Pharmacy locations nationwide. Over the past several years, the company has also donated over 1,000 units to local law enforcement. Together, these existing medication disposal units have collected more than 1.8 million pounds of unwanted medications, including over 90,000 pounds in Massachusetts, that might otherwise have been diverted, misused or ended up in the water supply.

Located in the pharmacy area of the CVS store and similar in design to a postal box, the safe medication disposal units allow customers to drop off unused prescriptions in a container or in sealed plastic bags if liquids or multiple medications are included.

Additionally, CVS Pharmacy locations that do not offer a safe medication disposal kiosk offer DisposeRx packets at no cost to patients filling an opioid prescription for the first time. According to the manufacturer, when warm water and the DisposeRx powder are added to a container, the combination breaks down medications including powders, pills, capsules, tablets, liquids or patches to a non-divertible biodegradable gel, allowing for safe disposal in the trash at home.
