I was going through cancer treatment when COVID hit

For Jason Beverett, protecting people has always been a way of life. The Lumberton resident dedicated nearly three decades in law enforcement, including nearly two decades teaching children about the dangers of tobacco use and drugs through a school based officer-led prevention program. As a husband, father of two and retired police officer, he has always done everything he can to keep his family healthy. ​

His capacity was tested during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Jason received an unexpected prostate cancer diagnosis. ​

While undergoing treatment, he needed to continue caring for his family and managing everyday life. At a time when many businesses were closed, Jason relied on CVS Health for COVID-19 vaccinations, pharmacy services and prescription support, including mail-order medications. ​

“I was going through cancer treatment when COVID hit,” Jason said. “The world was basically shut down, but I was able to get vaccinated in a very short amount of time, which contributed to me being able to continue my care. CVS Health has come through when I needed them the most.” ​

The experience reinforced something he had been teaching students for years. ​

In 2014, when CVS Pharmacy locations nationwide stopped selling tobacco products, he incorporated the decision into his student lessons as a real-world example of putting community health first. ​

“As a police officer, I spent the majority of my career teaching kids about the dangers of tobacco and drugs,” Jason said. “I can tell kids to make good choices, but CVS Health gave them the example they could actually see.” ​

Today, Jason remains grateful for the support CVS Health provided during one of the most challenging chapters of his life. ​

“They seemed genuinely concerned about my personal health,” he said. “A lot of things in my life need to be simple. CVS Health makes my life simple.” ​
