The Power of Nurses: Victor’s Story

Key points

  • Victor Marti, RN, a specialty infusion nurse with Coram/CVS Specialty, has spent nine years building trust with patients in their homes—arriving not just with clinical expertise, but with calm, confidence, and care.
  • When an insurance policy change left two young brothers with hemophilia without in home infusion support, Victor quickly arranged support—teaching them and their family how to administer medication and giving the boys something lasting: independence.
  • Across CVS Health, approximately 18,000 nurses serve as a vital link between patients and care—part of a national workforce of more than 5.3 million nurses, whose role in shaping the future of health has never been more essential.

Sometimes there are patients nurses remember most.

The laminated thank you letter still hangs on Victor Marti’s refrigerator. It’s framed in hand colored pink and yellow, bordered with small red hearts. The handwriting belongs to a 6 year old—surprisingly whimsical, with loops at the end of each letter like musical notes.

“Thank you for teaching me how to self infuse myself.”

A crisis that changed everything

Victor, a specialty infusion nurse with Coram/CVS Specialty in the Los Angeles, California, area, met Nicolas Mosesman and his 7 year old brother, Sebastian, during a moment of crisis. Both boys were living with hemophilia and required infusions every other day.

When a sudden insurance policy change left the family without their regular in home nurse, their parents weren’t sure how they would manage their care.

Victor didn’t hesitate. He rearranged his schedule and made himself available—not just to administer medication, but to ensure the boys didn’t lose the stability they depended on.

“At first, teaching them self infusion felt almost impossible,” Victor says. “They were so young. But independence was critical for their future.”

What followed were months of hands on teaching, steady reassurance, and a consistent presence that helped turn an overwhelming process into something they could master. Victor taught the boys. Then he taught their parents how to administer the medication safely. Slowly, doubt transformed into skill. The boys learned a lifelong practice. The family regained control. And Victor became part of their story.

Today, the brothers are 13 and 14. They all stay in touch—holiday cards, text messages, the occasional visit—reminders of a bond that began with a crisis and grew into trust. Victor now shares what the boys went through with other patients who feel overwhelmed, drawing on that experience—and the thank you letter he keeps close—as a daily reminder.

“It helps them see what’s possible,” he says. “If two young kids can overcome their fears and learn self infusion, they can, too.”

Nurses power every moment of care

Victor’s experience reflects what nurses across CVS Health do every day: meet patients where they are, ease moments of uncertainty, and make complex care feel manageable.

At CVS Health, approximately 18,000 nurses support patients in every setting where health happens.

This includes, but is not limited to, roles such as:

  • MinuteClinic® nurses and nurse practitioners, who deliver accessible acute, preventive and primary care in communities across the country
  • Aetna® registered nurse case managers, who coordinate care for individuals with chronic or complex conditions, helping them navigate treatment plans and stay connected to needed support
  • Signify Health® nurse practitioners, who conduct In-Home Health Evaluations to help identify risks early and strengthen continuity of care
  • Oak Street Health® nurses and nurse practitioners, who serve on care teams that provide comprehensive primary care for Medicare patients, with a focus on prevention and chronic condition management
  • Coram®/CVS Specialty® nurses, who provide education and clinical support, including in home infusion care, helping bring stability and confidence to patients managing rare or complex conditions

Together, these teams expand access, simplify care, and improve health outcomes for millions of people each year.

Nurses are the backbone of health care—today and tomorrow

Nursing remains one of the most trusted professions in the United States. According to the latest U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, more than 5.3 million nurses support patient care nationwide—far outnumbering the country’s roughly 375,000 physicians. Demand continues to grow: between 2020 and 2030, the nursing workforce is projected to increase by nearly 11%, adding more than 593,000 new roles.

At CVS Health, nurses are advancing quality, strengthening community health, and shaping a more connected and equitable future of care. Their expertise guides patients through some of life’s most vulnerable moments—just as Victor did for two young brothers whose story continues to inspire him, and many others, today.
