Aetna Named One of the NAFE Top 50 Companies for Executive Women for 2014

Company recognized for dedication to women in leadership for the 15th time

HARTFORD, Conn. – Aetna (NYSE: AET) has been named by the National Association of Female Executives (NAFE) to the 2014 NAFE Top 50 Companies for Executive Women. This prestigious list highlights companies whose commendable practices identify and promote successful women. This is the 15th time that Aetna has appeared on the list. Aetna will be among the first companies to join the NAFE Top Companies for Executive Women Hall of Fame.

In determining its Top 50 Companies, NAFE places specific emphasis on the number of women running the business-of-the-business jobs with profit-and-loss responsibility. According to research conducted by the Working Mother Research Institute for NAFE, 28 percent of women are top earners at winning companies, up from 25 percent last year, and the percentage of female executives with profit-and-loss responsibility has grown from 19 percent to 22 percent. In addition, the research found that 26 percent of women in the top companies are responsible for at least $1 billion in revenue per year versus 23 percent from last year, and 60 percent of companies now offer sponsorship programs. Aetna exceeds each of these metrics.

In addition to the Aetna Women's Employee Resource Group and the Aetna Women's Leadership Alliance, the company launched the Strategies for Success program last year as a way to accelerate the advancement of highly talented women. The program content includes long-term career planning, strategies for influencing, managing risk and sponsorship.


The 2014 NAFE Top Companies application includes more than 200 questions on female representation at all levels, especially the corporate officer and profit-and-loss ranks. The vetting process includes tracking access and usage of programs and policies that promote the advancement of women as well as the training and accountability of managers in relation to the number of women who advance. In order to be eligible for the NAFE Top Companies survey, entrants must have a minimum of 1,000 employees, two women on the Board of Directors and be a public or private company. NAFE also separately names the Top 10 companies in the non-profit sector.
