As home-based health care gains traction as a viable option for people living with a variety of chronic conditions, Coram CVS Specialty Infusion Services (Coram) is leading the way in home infusion care and parenteral (intravenous) and enteral (tube feeding) nutrition. In fact, home infusion care can be a high-quality, cost-effective treatment alternative when compared to the same care provided in an in-patient/hospital or clinic-based setting.
As part of Coram’s commitment to providing high-quality, effective care, the company is actively involved in home nutrition care research to continue to advance the knowledge of practicing health care practitioners and improve care for patients. This research includes evaluating the impact of transitioning nutrition care from the hospital to the home and the benefits of home-based parenteral and enteral nutrition in certain populations.
March is National Nutrition Month, and recently, a team of Coram dietitians presented the company’s latest research at the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) 2019 Annual Conference, including:
-
A demonstration of how Coram’s parenteral nutrition services benefit home nutrition patients by allowing them to travel safely internationally with their large-volume medically necessary liquids.
-
A case review describing the education process and impact of a care transition from hospital to home for a pediatric patient requiring parenteral nutrition whose parents are blind.
-
A retrospective review of clinical data of patients with esophageal cancer receiving home enteral nutrition after an esophagectomy to determine the average and optimal length of tube feeding required post-surgery.
-
An evaluation of interventions related to complications from a stoma — a surgically created opening to enable waste to be removed from the body — to understand if providing specially trained clinicians is beneficial in reducing stoma site complications and improving the experience for home enteral nutrition patients.
-
A study to better understand the population of patients who can benefit from home-based blenderized tube feeding, which involves pureeing and mixing together whole foods before administering them via the patient’s feeding tube.
-
Research evaluating the impact of specialized intravenous lipid emulsions on liver function for both adult and pediatric patients.
