Key points

  • Delivering quality, evidence-based care starts by understanding the health conditions that are disproportionately or uniquely experienced by women.
  • Guided by feedback on their most pressing health needs, MinuteClinic®, part of the CVS Health® family of companies, launched clinical services tailored to women, with locations across the US and a robust national virtual care practice.
  • Retail and virtual care are part of our holistic approach to women’s health.

Women often are the chief medical officers for their households, making 80% of health care decisions for their families and loved ones. Yet, despite their impact on health care decision-making, women face barriers when trying to access high quality, personalized and convenient care that meets their own unique health needs.

Women need personalized guidance and tailored resources to help them throughout their health journeys.

That’s why our holistic approach to women’s health centers around prioritizing personalized health care through services that support women at every stage of their lives. Specifically, MinuteClinic® clinical offerings that provide support for heart health, maternal mental health, menopause and healthy aging, among others.

Delivering quality, evidence-based care starts by understanding the health conditions that are disproportionally or uniquely experienced by women. Consider, for example, that while 1.3 million women enter menopause each year, about 80% of medical residents say they are uncomfortable discussing or providing menopause care. And one in five women experience maternal mental health conditions, which remain underdiagnosed and undertreated during and following pregnancy.

With MinuteClinic locations across the U.S. and MinuteClinic® Virtual CareTM available in most states, MinuteClinic has a unique opportunity to increase access to services customized for the unique needs and experiences of women.

62% of MinuteClinic clinical touchpoints over a five-year period were with women, representing 17.9M+ encounters, according to a CVS Health analysis.

Part of the MinuteClinic strategy included surveying over 1,500 women about their experiences with menopause and maternal health, bringing the voices of consumers into our clinical offerings.

Insights from our surveys include:

  • 57% of women aged 45-60 said they have discussed menopause symptoms with their providers. Several of those who did not voiced concerns about finding providers with the right expertise who would take their concerns seriously.
  • 88% of women without a physical or mental health condition said they experienced negative emotions during their pregnancy or postpartum experience, as did 95% of women with existing physical or mental health conditions.
  • 62% of women said that they would be interested in counseling services related to maternal mental health, and 68% said they liked the idea of menopause support offered through CVS Health.

These are just a few of the many data points MinuteClinic collected from surveys and interviews of consumers and clinicians — spanning menopause, maternal, reproductive, sexual, mental and menstrual health — that help guide high-quality care and support for women during critical stages of their health journeys.

One way MinuteClinic supports women’s health along their journeys is by equipping providers with the education and resources they need to care for women during menopause — a critical stage in midlife. Only 20% of health care providers are trained to support women’s menopause care needs. That’s why MinuteClinic has partnered with the Menopause Society to train its providers in supportive menopause care, including evidence-based practices, to help give women more access to the care they need during this stage in their lives.

MinuteClinic also launched clinical services for postpartum mental health, as well as offerings supporting reproductive, sexual and menstrual health.

Engaging consumers to understand the challenges they face during moments that matter across their health care journeys allowed MinuteClinic to build an informed approach to developing its clinical services. They are now part of the standard MinuteClinic offerings, and we have expanded our menopause support to include a virtual care option, available in most states.

MinuteClinic is just one way we are supporting women’s health across our retail pharmacy and care delivery businesses along with our medical and pharmacy benefits. Incorporating feedback from consumers, providers, plan sponsors and advocacy organizations has guided us in supporting everyone we serve in their journey toward better health.
