People with rare or chronic conditions often require complex treatments and specialty medications that can be more costly for both payors and patients. Making sure those medications are available at the lowest possible cost — and without a long wait — is a top priority for us.

But we don’t stop there. We also provide support to ensure that patients are able to get their questions answered, deal with treatment side effects and stay on their medications. We know there can be hurdles along the way, but overcoming these challenges means fewer complications and hospital stays.

The majority of new medications approved today are specialty drugs. That’s great news for patients, as many of these treatments allow them to enjoy a full and satisfying life. But these drugs often come at a steep cost, and prices are expected to soar in the years to come, which can be challenging for patients, payors and the entire healthcare system.

Dedicated teams of specialists called CareTeams, led by a pharmacist and nurse trained in complex and chronic conditions. CareTeams help patients manage side effects, communicate with doctors, and coordinate with other care providers. They are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to answer questions about conditions and treatments. Convenient, digital tools that meet patients where they are. The CVS Specialty app and website allow patients to order refills, track orders, and management payments, from one convenient platform at any time. Patients can also communicate directly with their CareTeams using the CVS Specialty app Secure Messaging feature.

Rick’s story

CVS Specialty patients can use our mobile app or visit the CVS Specialty website to easily order refills, check the status of their prescriptions, manage payments and send secure messages to their CareTeam.

In addition to the CVS Specialty app and website, we use technology to improve care with our Specialty Expedite and Specialty Connect programs.

Specialty Expedite uses digital tools to help get patients started on new medications quickly. We work with providers to streamline prior authorization for prescriptions, and with insurance companies to verify benefits coverage.

Specialty Connect offers patients the choice of drop-off and pick-up of specialty prescriptions at any one of more than 9,000 CVS Pharmacy locations, or delivery to the location of their choosing. Being able to access medications wherever they prefer helps patients stay on their treatments and avoid complications and hospitalizations.
