In addition to specialty medications, CVS Specialty provides clinical support, education and counseling to patients with rare or chronic conditions.
We support your specialty pharmacy needs
People with rare or chronic conditions often require complex treatments and specialty medications that can be more costly for both payors and patients. Making sure those medications are available at the lowest possible cost — and without a long wait — is a top priority for us.
But we don’t stop there. We also provide support to ensure that patients are able to get their questions answered, deal with treatment side effects and stay on their medications. We know there can be hurdles along the way, but overcoming these challenges means fewer complications and hospital stays.
CVS Specialty patient Judith Rahmani was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1986. At the time, there were no medications, but she faced the challenges with the support of her husband and children. Now, she has others in her corner, too.
Champions for value
The majority of new medications approved today are specialty drugs. That’s great news for patients, as many of these treatments allow them to enjoy a full and satisfying life. But these drugs often come at a steep cost, and prices are expected to soar in the years to come, which can be challenging for patients, payors and the entire healthcare system.
As one of the nation’s largest and most experienced providers of specialty pharmacy services, CVS Specialty is able to negotiate with drug manufacturers for the most competitive prices and ensure appropriate use and access to complex and pricey therapies. We also keep on top of changes in the drug pipeline and offer generics and biosimilars when they are available.
In addition, we help payors use advanced analytics and technology to enable more precise interventions and employ clinically appropriate and effective utilization management solutions. For example, we use digital technology to track patient medication use, refill patterns and excess supply of certain specialty drugs as well as can identify gaps in care and ensure support is delivered at the right moment through the right channel for each patient. This helps us promote medication adherence and avoid unnecessary emergency room visits reducing wasteful spend and overall payor costs.
Partners in care
Managing a complex condition is not easy. Patients who depend on specialty medications need more than just a prescription and a pharmacist to fill it. They need ongoing clinical support, education and counseling to help manage their condition. They need the assurance that the medications will be available when they need them, with minimal administrative delay. They may also need help coordinating their care from multiple health care providers.
Dedicated teams of specialists called CareTeams, led by a pharmacist and nurse trained in complex and chronic conditions. CareTeams help patients manage side effects, communicate with doctors, and coordinate with other care providers. They are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to answer questions about conditions and treatments. Convenient, digital tools that meet patients where they are. The CVS Specialty app and website allow patients to order refills, track orders, and management payments, from one convenient platform at any time. Patients can also communicate directly with their CareTeams using the CVS Specialty app Secure Messaging feature.
Care at patients’ home, or at more than 90 locations nationwide, for patients requiring an infused specialty therapy. Our Coram CVS Specialty Infusion Services help patients who take infusion therapy avoid hospital stays or placement in skilled nursing facilities.
Rick Postell suffers from three serious conditions: psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis — but he did not want to break his 40-year record of never missing an Oregon Ducks football game. “I thought my life was over,” he said. “I just didn’t feel good.” He began working with Denise, a CareTeam member who calls him regularly and helps him with his medications. “Once they got me back on that medicine, two days later I could feel the difference. My contact with this gal is a lifesaver for me.”
A better process
Patients with complex conditions deserve access to their medications without undue paperwork, frustration or delay. Convenience is not just nice to have. It can be the key to safeguarding health.
CVS Specialty patients can use our mobile app or visit the CVS Specialty website to easily order refills, check the status of their prescriptions, manage payments and send secure messages to their CareTeam.
In addition to the CVS Specialty app and website, we use technology to improve care with our Specialty Expedite and Specialty Connect programs.
Specialty Expedite uses digital tools to help get patients started on new medications quickly. We work with providers to streamline prior authorization for prescriptions, and with insurance companies to verify benefits coverage.
Specialty Connect offers patients the choice of drop-off and pick-up of specialty prescriptions at any one of more than 9,000 CVS Pharmacy locations, or delivery to the location of their choosing. Being able to access medications wherever they prefer helps patients stay on their treatments and avoid complications and hospitalizations.
